Membership in UPE offers Computer Science students a unique opportunity to associate with fellow leading computer science students. Being the only international honor society for the computer sciences, UPE limits membership to only those students at the top of their class.

UPE membership at the University of Alabama is offered to Computer Science undergraduate and graduate students.  CS undergraduate majors must have completed at least CS 325 and CS 357.  In addition, these students must be classified as juniors with the University according to earned credit hours.  Computer Science graduate students must have completed at least 9 hours of CS coursework at the 600-level.  Potential members are contacted early in the Spring semester of each year, with an initiation ceremony held during Honors Week in April.

UPE consists of many individual chapters located throughout North America and abroad.  The University of Alabama chapter was founded in 1989. In addition, UPE is endorsed by the two largest computer organizations in the world, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS).
