Minors offered through Computer Science
The Department of Computer Science offers three distinct minor programs. These programs are designed to meet the needs of three diverse student groups. Each of these minor programs is explained below:
Traditional Minor in Computer Science. This minor is designed for students wishing to learn about the discipline of computing while pursuing a major in another field. Students in this minor take the same courses as do computer science majors, stopping after 20 hours of coursework is completed. The requirements for this minor include: CS 114, CS 116, CS 124, CS 325, CS 357, ECE 380 and ECE 383.
Minor in Computer Software Systems. This minor is primarily designed for students who are majoring in Management Information Systems (MIS) within the College of Commerce and Business Administration. It provides a program suitable for students seeking professional employment involving the development of business-oriented software. The requirements for this minor include CS 114, CS 116, CS 124, CS 325, CS 375, CS 415 and one other CS 400-level course.
Minor in Computer Technology and Applications. This minor is designed for students who do not wish to become computer scientists, but realize that their chosen field requires the regular use of basic computing skills. The department has constructed a set of courses designed for non-majors designed to promote computer literacy and enhance basic computing skills. These courses include CS 102, CS 202, CS 205, CS 285, CS 302, CS 340, CS 385, CS 466, and CS 114/116, and CS 124. The requirements for this minor include: CS 102, CS 466, plus any four other CS courses (it is normally recommended that students choose from the courses listed above to complete this requirement, as these courses are designed for non-majors). However, any CS course in our program can be counted towards this minor.
