2024-2025 Computer Science Faculty Search
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Alabama is hiring multiple faculty members to support its rapid growth in research funding and student population. The College of Engineering, the home of Computer Science, has seen research funding more than double in the last five years and is pushing its “Top-30+ by 30” initiative to have the College and all its Departments achieve top-30 impact.
In addition to searching for strong faculty in all areas, the Department of Computer Science is specifically searching for candidates with expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Cyber Security, High-Performance Computing, Robotics, Software Engineering, and Quantum Computing to join an existing cohort of faculty and continue to grow our already strong program.
Department highlights include:
- A transformative, $96M project to deploy a High-Performance Computing facility that will support research across the spectrum of university disciplines, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence and machine learning applications to problems in science, engineering, medicine, and the humanities.
- Newly established Alabama Center for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence
- ABET-accredited Bachelor of Cyber Security degree
- NSF-sponsored Scholarship for Service program

- Faculty connections and collaborations with Alabama Cyber Institute, Alabama Transportation Institute, Alabama Water Institute, and Alabama Life Research Institute
The Computer Science Department offers B.S degrees in Computer Science and Cyber Security and M.S. and PhD degrees in Computer Science. It also participates in the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Data Science degree. The University of Alabama, with over 40,000 students has been designated with the R1- Very High Research Activity status and is one of the two fastest growing research institutions in the nation.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Assistant Professor
Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution. Demonstrated record of prior research work and a record of impactful scholarly publications in refereed journals, conference proceedings, and similarly impactful venues. Demonstrated interest and/or record in computer science education and professional service in area(s) of specialization. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Show the potential to construct and sustain a quality research program. Exhibit the potential for excellent teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Associate Professor
Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution. Demonstrated a record of prior research work and a record of impactful scholarly publications in refereed journals, conference proceedings, and similarly impactful venues. Demonstrated an outstanding record in computer science education and/or professional service in area(s) of specialization. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Full Professor
Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution. Demonstrated a record of prior research work and a record of impactful scholarly publications in refereed journals, conference proceedings, and similarly impactful venues. Demonstrated an outstanding record in computer science education and/or professional service in area(s) of specialization. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Assistant Professor
Demonstrated a record of high-quality research and scholarly publications that is recognized nationally and/or internationally. Significant record of scholarship in an computer science or closely related department with both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Post-doctoral experience or other similar post-graduate experience. Exceptional collegial, interpersonal, and mentoring skills.
Associate Professor
Have 5+ years of experience as a tenure-track/tenured faculty member at a leading peer R1 institution. Demonstrated record of building and sustaining a high quality, productive, and impactful research program including the successful mentoring of graduate students. Demonstrated record of excellent teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Demonstrated record of high-quality research and scholarly journal and conference publications that are recognized nationally and/or internationally. Significant record of scholarship in an academic department with both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Outstanding record of external grant funding.
Full Professor
Have 10+ years of experience as a tenure-track/tenured faculty member at a leading peer R1 institution. Demonstrated record of building and sustaining a high quality, productive, and impactful research program including the successful mentoring of graduate students. Demonstrated record of excellent teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Demonstrated record of high-quality research and scholarly journal and conference publications that are recognized nationally and internationally. Significant record of scholarship in an academic department with both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Outstanding record of external grant funding.

Required application documents include a:
- cover letter that includes the department name, the rank of position for which the candidate is applying, and a brief description of the area(s) of specialization for the candidate,
- a resume/curriculum vitae,
- a three to five page statement of research interests and plans,
- a one to two page statement of three teaching interests and plans, and
- the names and contact information for at least four professional references.
