Graduate

UA’s computer science department offers interdisciplinary graduate programs leading to master’s and doctoral degrees.

Degrees

Applicants for graduate work in computer science must apply for admission to UA’s Graduate School.
Please refer to Section 4.4 of the Graduate Catalog for specific admission requirements.

Graduate Application Deadlines

Domestic & International*
Fall – December 31 (Priority for funding); No Deadline for Graduate Admissions
Spring – No Deadline for Graduate Admissions

* Note: International students must allow enough time to process visa paperwork, etc. if they are accepted into the program.

Information for Potential Graduate Students without a Computer Science Undergraduate Degree

Students without a degree in CS but who want to apply for an MS degree can take the following prerequisites as a non-degree graduate student: CS100, CS101, CS200, CS201, CS300, CS301. Once you have completed these courses, you can take our senior level courses, such as programming languages, algorithms, etc. at the 5xx level. At the end of the semester in which you are taking the 5xx courses you can apply to our MS program. The good thing about this is although the lower level courses will not count towards your MS degree in CS, the 5xx courses will. The MS degree page has a list of courses required. We offer most courses at least once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need to identify an advisor prior to applying?
No. You should first apply to the graduate program before seeking an advisor.

2. What is the application deadline?
For Fall, the priority deadline to be considered for funding is December 31. We will still consider applications after that date.

For Spring, the Department typically does not offer new TA positions. Therefore, there is no application deadline.

3. How can I apply for a Teaching or Research Assistantship?
There is not a separate application for assistantships. We consider all accepted students for Departmental TA positions. Those Assistantships to the strongest applicants, typically PhD students.

We also maintain a list of faculty members who are looking for Research Assistants. Please visit the List of Available Graduate Research Positions to view that information. Potential students are welcome to contact faculty members on this list directly. However, contacting other faculty members is not advised, as they are less likely to respond.

4. Is the GRE required?
The GRE is not required for admission. However, we will consider it as one of the factors in making funding decisions.

5. Do you accept the WES Evaluation Report/Result Master Degree Program in computer science?
See the Graduate Application FAQ.

6. Can The University accept proof of English proficient Letter from the institutions were I completed my undergraduate studies in other to enable the University to waive IELTS for Prospective students of Nigeria?
Visit the English Language Proficiency Policy for questions about English language requirements.

7. Other Questions?
See the Graduate Application FAQ.

Laptop Requirement

The College of Engineering requires all students to have their own laptop. Please visit the required laptop specifications page for more details about the minimum requirements for the laptop.
